Project
The Glenholm
Wildlife Project is based at the Glenholm Centre, two miles south of the village of Broughton on the western edge
of the Scottish Borders
region close to the borders with South Lanarkshire, and Dumfries and Galloway.
Just 20 miles to the south along the A701 is the town of Moffat on the
M74, the northern-most stretch of the M6 running between
the English Midlands and Glasgow. 30 miles to the north of us, again along the A701,
is the city of Edinburgh while Glasgow is only 45 miles away.
From the south: use the M74 to the Moffat turn off. Then follow the A701 through Moffat past the Devil's Beef Tub and through the village of Tweedsmuir. (Note that in severe weather this road sometimes becomes impassable and you should continue along the A74 northward and then turn north onto the A702 to Biggar at Abington.) One mile south of Broughton and about one hundred yards before the B712 turning on the right to Peebles, turn left along the single track lane sign-posted to Glenholm.
From the east: use the A72 from Peebles and then turn left onto the B712 sign-posted to Broughton. Follow this road through Stobo, Dawyck and Drumelzier until you come to the T-junction with the A701. Turn left and then almost immediately first right onto the single track lane sign-posted to Glenholm.
From Edinburgh: take the Straiton exit from the City By-Pass and follow the A701 through Penicuik and towards Peebles. At Leadburn turn right toward Broughton, Moffat and Biggar still following the A701 (the road to Peebles becomes the A703). Drive through Lamancha, Romanno Bridge, Blyth Bridge and Broughton. About one mile beyond Broughton you will pass the B712 turning on the left to Peebles. About 100 yards beyond this turning turn right onto the single track lane sign-posted to Glenholm.
From Glasgow: Take the M8 to Chapel Hall and then the A73 through Newmains, Carluke, Lanark and Hyndford Bridge. At St. John's Kirk turn left onto the A72 through Symington toward Biggar. At the T-junction with the A702 turn left toward Biggar. Drive through the middle of Biggar and then turn right onto the B7016 sign-posted to Broughton. At Broughton turn right and drive through the village. About one mile beyond Broughton you will pass the B712 turning on the left to Peebles. About 100 yards beyond this turning turn right onto the single track lane sign-posted to Glenholm.
Once off the A701 the Centre is clearly sign-posted. The Glenholm Centre is at the heart of a cluster of cottages and houses about a mile and a half along the single track road, beyond Holmsmill (to the right) and before the first cattle grid. Turn right at Glenholm and the Centre itself is on your right. Parking is in front of the Centre with overflow parking around the next corner between the cottages and the old Glenholm cemetary.
